A Very Happy Cambodian New Year to You!
Or as we say in Khmer/Cambodian, Soursdey Chnam Thmey! សួស្ដីឆ្នាំថ្មី!
For those of you unfamiliar with the seemingly late new year celebration, Khmer New Year is a three-day holiday that marks the end of the harvesting season. But growing up in California and not Cambodia, this mostly meant going to the local temple to run around, play, eat and dance to Santana music. Don't ask me why, but Cambodians love a good Santana cover band.
In related news, Don't Think I've Forgotten, the highly anticipated film documenting the lost (and awesome) rock and roll scene in Cambodia in the '60s and '70s will finally be screening in San Francisco and Berkeley from May 8-14. Go check it out while you can!
