Recreating the richness of a physical experience in the digital space

The Ferry Building with its dramatic clock tower is an iconic landmark in San Francisco. It was once the primary portal to the city; today it’s a bustling marketplace of local farmers, artisan producers, and restaurants. 

Challenge

When we started working with the Ferry Building in 2016, they still had an outdated website, far from the real experience that people enjoy visiting the place today. Our role was to rethink the entire site from the ground up and team up with the fine folks at the Ferry Building to rethink the entire digital experience.

APPROACH

We created an entirely new site for the mobile age but also deliver the richness of the actual ferry building experience in a compelling, modern, visually engaging style. It was imperative that the new site recreated the physical experience of visiting the Ferry Building, online. So a big part of the project for Sköna included art directing a photoshoot of every nook and cranny of the Ferry Building. We were incredibly lucky to engage the fantastic photography team Nat & Cody, who were up for the challenge.

 This meant an entirely new structure, new merchant profiles, visitor information, maps and photo galleries, as well as a new blog and newsletter design to complement the digital presence. Meanwhile, we also spent a lot of time testing to get the UX just right to be workable for tourists, non-English speakers, natives, grandmas and millennials alike.

Results

Now, four months after the launch the Ferry Building analytics are shooting through the roof.  Compared to 4 months before the launch there has been a:

  • 1,462.69% increase in sessions

  • 1,219.58% increase in users

  • 2,217.74% increase in pageviews

  • 247.75% increase in average session duration
